I had four Potions of Treasure Finding in my bags, and on a lark I headed over to Deepholm to do some AOE farming and see if I could make some decent coin out of it. I did some research on what spots were optimal, and it turns out the the best place had been hotfix nerfed two days ago. Drat.
However, another great spot was still ripe for the pickings and so off I went to the northeast corner of the map, to the Verlok Stand, to start knocking heads around. What makes Verlok Stand so attractive is the respawn rates there are intense. So, one of the first things you want to do is establish a safe zone at the tip of the Stand.
You’re going to find that if you just fight everything in the middle, mobs are going to respawn on you at a lightning pace and you’ll never be able to loot. Not to mention get overwhelmed.
So good practice is to grab mobs with ranged attacks and drag them back to your safe spot and then AOE them down. Putting your back to the pillar is a good idea, so mobs don’t circle around you.
Also keep in mind while the Troggs don’t hit super hard, they have an attack–Troglodyte Smash–that can knock a good 15% of your health or so out every time. So when you hear that wooshing noise that they’re casting the attack, strafe just more than 5 yards and thus be out of range of the attack. The mob will move over to you and continue meleeing.
The biggest part of this farming venture is to have a Potion of Treasure Finding active so you can loot Tiny Treasure Chests.
Between the mobs dropping 15-40 silver each, looting about 18 tiny chests (and thus the contents), and various greys and greens, I probably made about 500g from my venture. Of course, I got sidetracked a lot and probably wasted a good 15 minutes of the potion (not to mention dying once due to trying to fight everything in the middle initially and getting subsequently overrun) . With some efficiency changes I can squeeze a lot more value out of the potion I think.
Also, your shield is going to take a beating. Watch your durability.
In any case, the pots are being buffed in 4.0.6, so I’ll be holding off on further ventures until then.
Anyone else AOE farm? Where do you go?
Ah, they’re being buffed? I hadn’t heard about that. I hear money bags jingling… Lol
.-= Nehmen’s last blog ..Too many raiders! =-.
AoE grinding is one of my favorite things to do. Deepholm is full of grinding opportunities.
My Prot Pally isn’t a raider so he’s a Skinner/Tailor strictly because farming leather is best done AoE style and so is cloth (especially with an 50% chance for extra cloth drops).
I do my leather grind in Hyjal on the dragonkin who share the area with the mini-boss for that quest like. They have a very fast respawn rate, a high drop rate for greens, and the only annoying thing about fighting them is that they charge you and knock you down when you first get aggro. Coin, greens, and skins all in one little bunch is pretty sweet. Especially if you have a LW that can turn the scraps into Savage Leather.
For my cloth I farm mostly in Twilight Highlands. As Alliance I most often do the escort quest that isn’t an actual escort, where a dwarf sets off orc ambushes on purpose because he likes to kill orcs. There are three groups of 5-8 orcs each time in a short escort path so you kill them all, drop the quest, pick it back up and do it again. He starts the quest on both ends of the path and just goes back and forth so as long as you hit them all before he kills them you get the drops.
The horde/alliance fighting on the coast near between the faction hubs is a decent area too, though you’ll occasionally get flagged for PvP which can be a problem for some.
This is hilarious, I was going to put up a post about this myself earlier today but hadn’t edited the video I’d made. Instead I’ll just direct people here. :D I’m glad I’m not the only one farming out here!

I haven’t tried Cata aoe farming yet… perhaps I’ll get my feet wet after the pending buff on that potion.
Oddly enough, with Frostweave Cloth (yes, Wrath cloth) selling for around 100g a stack on my server, I’ve been hitting the AT Grounds on my tailoring alt and facerolling back and forth across the area. Check prices on this and other Wrath stuff, it might be worth your time, as it’s been well worth mine :)
Not to stray too far from aoe farming, but I’ve also heard good stories about mining in Icecrown recently (empty zone combined with seemingly increased respawns). Not to mention that if Thorium prices are high on your server, hit Silithus with epic flying and make bank.
I’m shocked at Thorium going up as Cata brought about a 20 fold increase in thorium nodes. First time ever leveling a toon and I had way more thorium I needed to level blacksmithing.
I farmed the very same spot for one hour and got exactly one tiny treasure chest. I was not amused, but I might try it again after the patch buffs the potions slightly.
Y.
I farmed for one hour and got 22 chests. 165 embersilk cloths, including what mobs dropped. I took anywhere from 3-8 mobs at a time (using CDs like Guardian and Avenger’s Wrath on the bigger pulls) with Seal of Insight up. Altogether, netted a profit of about 600-650g on my server, but 5% less with AH cut. I try to make most of my money on AH, but that is not a bad gold/hour rate.
When I kill them they are unlootable…
on ysondre-us as well. the smaller flayers are disappointingly unsparkly.
