We’ve got the orange fever

Last week when we killed Sindragosa, Nordicslayer, our designated Shadowmourne-wielder-to-be, completed the Frost Infusion quest. Last night in our usual 10/12 romp through ICC-25 we had 7 Shadowfrost Shards drop. That’s a 70% drop rate, much higher than the 25% I was expecting.

I’m not sure where I got that number, but I’m happy that I wrong. We’re on track to finish that Shadowmourne by the end of June (sooner if luck is favorable and the randomness holds out). We have another person, a DK, who’ll be finishing Frost Infusion tonight and can collect shards as soon as Nordic is done. I’d expect his Shadowmourne to be done around August.

Very exciting!

On a related note, there’s been discussion about what to do with the BOE chest loot. While the system that these items come from is ridiculously ill-thought out, the fact that they are BOE means I can use them for some great guild morale boosting. The plan as it is now is the two Shadowmourne builders can pick one item from the chest to keep for themselves (both will probably pick the mount) and the rest we’ll distribute via some sort of guild lottery or as prizes in guild events.

Likewise I’m planning to somehow cajole everyone into unanimously giving me the Tabard of the Lightbringer as a thank you for all the stress the lovable scamps have put me through while running the guild and raids. I think I can sway them with some dignified weeping.

What I’m curious about is this, if your guild is building a Shadowmourne, what kind of drop rate are you seeing–or did you see–on the shards? And also, what’s your plan for the five BOE items?

Our Shadowmourner (also a warrior) has almost 20 shards, and the majority have come from normal 25 ICC. We RARELY see them drop on heroic for some reason, and when we switch to normal for some bosses, BOOM, there’s a shard.

As for the loot, I don’t think anybody has any idea. I’m not sure many people know about the quest after you build Shadowmourne.

Hrm, sounds like dumb luck on our part… This worries me.

My guild hasn’t been that lucky with the shards. I believe our Shadowmourne owner-to-be has only gotten 5 in about 20 boss kills.

I had no idea that there was a chest of BOE loot to look forward to.

The first time you kill Arthas with a Shadowmourne he drops a Sealed Chest only lootable by the person with the Shadowmourne. Inside the chest are five items that start five quests and complete out to give you these five things: Tabard of the Lightbringer, Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger, Muradin’s Favor, Jaina’s Locket, and Sylvanas’ Music Box.

Hey. I’ve been a reader of your blog recently (love it by the way!) and I just wanted to give you a quick word of caution!
My guild finished our shadowmourne a while back and we were so excited for the box. Unfortunately our shadowmourne wielder completed and turned in his “Kill the LK” quest on 10 man the night before we went to Arthas on our 25 and behold – no box (the box only drops on 25 man)! I think you have to have the quest in your log at the time of the kill to get the box. We never got one. :(

It’s so unfair how much easier it is for the melee legendary shards to drop!! BOO!

I would say luck. It took us about 6-7 weeks to complete our first one. Four weeks into our second one we are at the half way mark. We get about 4-7 per week doing 11/12 hard modes.

Interesting. I hope we continue to be pretty lucky, then. I’m sure it’ll crater pretty soon.

I find tears to be particularly useful when trying to snag items from my raid without seeing like a loot whore. A bit of martyrdom (“I didn’t REALLY want that,it’s okay… I’m sure it’ll drop again, as I’m *always* here for *you* guys to run the raid every week anyway, so, you know… I can *wait*…”) also goes a good ways.

    Good luck! ;)

Our luck has been abysmal. I want to say it’s been 7 or 8 weeks since our Shadowmourne wielder started on shards, and we JUST NOW have 48/50?

Also, as far as I know, he’s stated he’s keeping everything, and since he’s an officer and friend of the co-guild leaders, they’re not stopping him. Hooray.

    Fucking Blizzard.

With chests, we’ve gone with “Shadowmourne recipient gets to keep one item, the rest go for random roll on farmnight”

As far as droprates go, we see anywhere from 4 (tonight) to 12 (last week) in an 11/12 heroic clear. We’re working on our 4th Shadowmourne (41/50) – one was a transfer with a complete shadowmourne, and one was a transfer with 43/50, though, we finished his when he made raider, just for the boost on H-LK pulls.
