Shoring up expertise

This is what happens when I don’t look at Maintankadin for a few days–and thanks to Honors for alerting me to this–an unannounced change in 3.3 was discovered that apparently ShoR is now on the melee table. This means that an enemy can now parry or dodge Shield of Righteousness. Which in turn makes expertise a much, much more attractive stat for us. But how attractive, you ask?

Under soft cap, expertise is now our best threat stat.

In addition to previous findings that expertise was “about 80% as good as dodge” for damage avoidance, now more than ever, being soft capped in expertise is mandatory.

Thankfully, we gain 6 expertise from talents and 10 from the SoV glyph, so we only need 81 rating to soft cap, a relatively easy goal.

Other side effects of the ShoR change: that’s another melee attack that will be proc’ing Mongoose or similar enchants.

Nonetheless! Tankadins, act accordingly.

I was at 35 expertise but recently with a few gear upgrades just dropped to 25 after I put on rimefang’s over the peacekeeper’s blade. I will probably keep the other blade on me during runs at all times and enchant it slightly different so i have it on hand when needed.

i should also add that I haven’t bothered to glyph for vengeance just because when i was at the 35 i didn’t think I needed it and with all the random groups for heroics i enjoyed having the extra target being hit by my hammer so i could chain pull more groups at once.

If it’s ever needed at least I have that glyph in my back pocket but do you think it’s worth using. Probably would be a good thing to use going into icc 10 man since i won’t really need the extra targets as much as i would in regular heroics and that extra 10 expertise could come in handy.

Exactly, HotR glyph is more for heroics (especially if you’re softcapped expertise) while the SoV glyph is definitely better for single-target threat and raids.

I was curious as to why all of a sudden so many tankadins on the official paladin forums and tanking forums were complaining of a threat nerf. I had not noticed a change to my threat at all, but then again I am at 27 expertise rating without the SoV glyph. I will make sure to keep one in my bag in case any new upgrades drop me below that.

Thanks for the heads up on the Expertise factor as well. I did read the blog note by Honors as well. Haven’t quite gotten back to my Paladin as yet so it helps to stay informed a bit. Recently started back reading the Maintankadin forums again to catch up with all the latest on changes like these.

    Thanks for keeping me informed!

This seems to be in response to the Lady Deathwhisper fight, where mobs are almost immune to either Physical or Spell dmg. Unfortunately I can see this being a problem for how Pally’s are geared.

I should test it again just to be safe, so correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m quite positive that silence still affects this ability, which it shouldn’t if it’s pure physical.

Silence does indeed still prevent you from casting ShoR, which is weird. It’s on the melee hit table, can be parried, dodged, etc. … but it’s still a spell. Somehow.

I’m wondering if I should drop the glyph (other two are judgment and DP) since there seems to be so much expertise that I’m sitting at an unbelievable amount of the stat (*38* without vengeance up). At what point does it become “too much”? I’m not even explicitly chasing it or anything, but it winds up on gear that I want. Hell, I’m even sitting at hit-cap from gear right now, with about 41k health without BoS and block cap with raid buffs (except in ICC naturally). My role right now is MT for ICC, and ToGC 10′s.

Hit is rare enough that I can juggle around an item or two to stay around cap without going over, but Idunno what the hell to do with expertise.

Thanks for the blog, BTW, great resource!

The SoV glyph is your best threat glyph even past the soft cap. If you’re past the hard cap for expertise (56) with the glyph, then you can drop it safely. Until then you won’t find a better choice, though.

And thanks for the kind words! :)
